Laser Gum Disease Treatment in Northfield

Dr. Davidson uses the latest dental laser technology to effectively treat even severe gum disease.

Effective, Minimally Invasive Treatment for Mild to Severe Gum Disease

gum-diseaseGum disease is a continuous bacterial infection that erodes teeth and the surrounding tissue. If it is allowed to continue too long untreated, teeth can eventually become loose or even fall out.

Dr. Davidson effectively treats mild, moderate and severe gum disease with advanced minimally invasive techniques, including state-of-the-art laser therapy. These techniques make gum disease treatment comfortable and eliminate the need for periodontal surgery for most patients.

Our Gum Disease Treatment

We use cutting-edge technology to ensure your gum disease treatment is thorough, effective and comfortable. We combine various high-tech procedures to reverse the infection and restore your teeth and gums to health and stability.

Comprehensive exam

We will first conduct a comprehensive exam, including digital X-rays and 3D imaging, to assess the extent of your gum disease and lay out a treatment plan specific to your needs.

During the exam, one of our hygienists will gently probe around your teeth to determine the depth of the pockets between your teeth and your gums. The deeper the pockets, the greater the level of gum disease.

Comfortable ultrasonic scaler

The first line of attack in treating all levels of gum disease is the removal of accumulated bacterial plaque on your teeth and below your gumline. This is known as “scaling.”

Our hygienists use ultrasonic scalers to gently and effectively remove these bacteria deposits. Ultrasonic scalers allow for comfortable scaling, and they are gentler on the teeth than traditional scalers.

Minimally invasive laser treatment

For moderate to severe gum disease, Dr. Davidson uses an advanced soft-tissue dental laser to remove bacteria that are buried deeply in the gum pockets. The dental laser functions as a minimally invasive and comfortable alternative to surgery with a scalpel, and there is no need for sutures.

Due to the precise nature of the laser beam, only the targeted, diseased tissues are affected and any other tissues are left unharmed. With laser treatment, healing is faster than with traditional gum surgery and there is little to no posttreatment swelling or discomfort.

DNA testing and antibiotic therapy

When necessary, Dr. Davidson uses Arestin® antibiotics, directly placed onto the affected tissues, as an additional assault on any remaining bacteria.

He may also take a sample of your saliva and plaque and have it analyzed at a lab for the specific strains of bacteria present. This allows him to prescribe a bacteria-specific oral antibiotic to attack any remaining infection through the bloodstream.

Home oral care education

Hygienist with patient

Your friendly hygienist will educate you on best home oral care practices.

Without effective home oral care, even the most thorough gum disease treatment can fail. Dr. Davidson will educate you before treatment is begun on the need for effective home oral care and regular maintenance cleanings. These are vital elements in keeping your gum disease at bay and maintaining your oral health into the future.

Your hygienist will use videos, visual aids and live demonstrations to show you proper brushing and flossing techniques. In this way you will be well-equipped to take good care of your oral health at home.
